Curriculum Intent

The intention of our well designed mathematics curriculum is to provide all learners the opportunity to access a broad and challenging programme of study, which builds upon and stretches prior learning. We want the pupils at St Joseph's to become enthusiastic learners, who understand the beauty and power of maths and its relevance in everyday life and their future careers. The Maths department looks to ensure that all pupils have a secure foundation of mathematical processes in order to become fluent in problem solving and reasoning, and our curriculum is carefully sequenced in order to best equip our pupils with the logical, reasoning and analytical skills required to be successful across a range of subjects.

Key Areas:

  • Mathematical Fluency - pupils develop fluency across all areas of the mathematics curriculum, including number, algebra, ratio and proportion, geometry, and statistics.
  • Application of Knowledge - pupils are expected to apply their mathematical understanding in both familiar and unfamiliar contexts.
  • Curriculum Design - topics are carefully sequenced and taught in depth, which provides a smooth transition between the different key stages.
  • Reasoning and Problem Solving - pupils explore mathematics in real-world contexts and develop their reasoning and problem-solving skills.
  • High-Quality Teaching - teachers use effective questioning, modelling and formative assessment strategies to introduce and develop learning.
