Physical Education

St. Joseph’s PE department prides itself on hard work and enthusiasm. We believe in giving all students, irrespective of their academic or physical ability the opportunity to develop their physical potential through a broad and well balanced curriculum.

Students in core PE receive one lesson per week. In addition to our curriculum based activities, year 10 students are offered the opportunity to take the Level 1 Sports Leaders Award. The core PE programme provides the chance to develop their understanding in the following areas: Athletics, Basketball, Cricket, Health Related Fitness, Netball, Rounders, Rugby, Softball, Table Tennis, Trampolining and Volleyball.

Year 11 students have the option between five different pathway choices: Boys Performance, Girls Performance, Participation, Change 4 Life, Leadership and Physical Challenge. These pathways are designed to allow students a choice of activities that they enjoy, ensuring a greater likelihood of maintaining a healthy lifestyle beyond their time at St. Joseph’s.

KS4 students have the option to choose our BTEC First Award in Sport, which is equivalent to one GCSE. Students are allocated an additional 4 hours per fortnight and will be assessed across two years in the following units:

Unit 1 – Fitness for Sport and Exercise (EXAM)

Unit 2 – Practical Sports Performance (COURSEWORK)

Unit 3 -Applying the Principles of Personal Training (COURSEWORK)

Unit 6 – Leading Sports Activities (COURSEWORK)

Coursework is assessed via assignments, analysis and improvement of performance in practical settings and leading a sports activity session. The units have been purposely selected to offer students a broad range of study which provides them with a fantastic knowledge base for future BTEC Level 3 study at KS5.
