Chaplaincy

“Caritas Christi Urget Nos: The love of Christ spurs us on”

What is St Joseph’s Chaplaincy?

The chaplaincy at St Joseph’s aims to reach out to students, staff and the community as a witness to the faith and invite them to explore more deeply the mission of the school’s Catholic Christian identity.

Day to Day

At St Joseph’s Catholic academy the chapel is a warm and welcoming place, open daily for both students and staff for silent prayer, meditation, reflection and spiritual guidance. Students and staff are all welcome to attend from all faiths and none to explore questions of faith and spirituality in a calm and welcoming atmosphere.

Every Friday at 8am either Fr David, Fr Adrian or Fr Saji celebrate Mass for the intentions of staff and students. All staff and students are welcome to attend.

We offer a termly Mass programme for students across the key stage spectrum and each class has the opportunity to work with the parish priests and the chaplain to plan, prepare for and deliver their own Mass.

For the Sixth Form we also offer a spiritual liturgy programme whereby they can incorporate their talents, spiritual gifts and ideas into an afternoon worship for the students ran by the students.

Sacramental preparation

Confirmation Programme: Students in years 8, 9, 10 and 11 are invited and supported in their faith journey towards this important sacrament. As a school we work closely with the parish communities to encourage and support each student through their preparations for this sacrament.

Featured Events

The EVENT:

St Joseph’s is home to the diocesan faith night the EVENT. This is an awesome night of faith, praise, games, music, worship and friendship. Every month between 100-120 students from across the diocese in years 6,7 and 8 come together to celebrate their faith, to forge friendships, have fun and develop spiritually. All students from across the diocese are welcome to come on the 3rd Wednesday of every month 6-7:30pm. To book your place please email YoungA@stjosephs.uk.net

Christmas Celebration

Every year we join together in December to celebrate the season of Advent. We host a special evening as a community to reflect on the importance of Christmas, the gifts and the talents of our tremendous students and the students lead us in our celebrations to remember the importance of Christmas. Last year we had over 500 parents and students attend and we even had our own version of the Hebburn Nativity. It would be lovely to see as many of you there again this year.

The Source

Four times per year, students from St Joseph’s attend the SOURCE for music, praise and worship. This is open to year 9-13 students. Anyone interested please see Adam for further details.

Flame – Wembley

In March 2017 15 students and staff from St Joseph’s journeyed to Wembley for the Flame conference which runs every two years. It is an amazing day to meet like-minded young people from across Europe to celebrate faith, have fun, enjoy music from world-renowned artists like Matt Redman and Guvana B.

Advent and Lenten liturgies

Every year we run Advent and Lenten liturgies for staff and students. We also run Advent and Lenten stations. These are a fantastic opportunity for staff and students to not only remind ourselves of each liturgical season, but also to link our spiritual journey to the particular season.

St Joseph’s Feast Days

This year we will be running a special day of celebration for St. Joseph’s day. Watch this space for details.

Candle Making

Every year Fr David works with our Year 7 students to create advent candles and reflect upon the meaning behind advent. This is always a highlight of our students’ faith journey in this school.

QA with Parish Priests

Our parish priests regularly come into school as part of our sacramental programmes to speak and reflect with students and staff. Priests hold Q+A sessions with students to allow students to reflect upon religious vocations and understand the faith in more depth.

Retreat Programme

Retreats are an integral part of our spiritual journey here at St Joseph’s. Students celebrate together and take time away from their busy academic schedules to come together, journey in faith and have fun.

Year 9: 5th-6th February 2018 at the Youth Village.

Year 12/13: 6th -7th February 2018 at the Youth Village.

Year 7: 16th-19th July 2018 at the Youth Village.

Extra-curricular

There is always lots of activities going on, so watch this space for further details. Some of the groups currently going on are:

Youth Alpha

Every Tuesday (3-4pm) students meet together to discuss modern day questions of faith following the Alpha Youth Ministry programme. This is a great opportunity for students and staff to gather together and explore any questions of faith, religion and spirituality that they may have.

Our Lady of the Rosary

Every lunch time students are welcome to attend our ‘Our Lady of the Rosary’ club where we take time to reflect upon scripture linked to our blessed Lady, we learn of her significance and we pray together the rosary and deepen our faith.

Community Links

The chaplaincy is working with the community to create links with those in our parish communities. We are creating Christmas hampers to distribute to our local communities. We are working the SVP to help those in need and we are working closely with the parish priests to build links with those in our parish communities.
