English

The English Department at St Joseph’s is a large department, consisting of 12 subject specialists. We are an enthusiastic team, committed to sharing our passion for the subject and providing a stimulating, dynamic and academically rigorous experience of English for all our students.  Reading for pleasure is at the heart of what we do, so we encourage our students to read widely and to develop mature and informed responses to their reading as well as actively promoting opportunities for nurturing writing skills and encouraging creative flair alongside the essential skills of spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Stimulating creativity and thought, both within and beyond the curriculum, is an important focus for the English Department. We encourage students to enter national competitions, such as ‘Read for My School’ and Radio 2’s ‘500 Words’ short story competition, as well as offering  students the opportunity to participate in a range of extra-curricular opportunities – everything from theatre visits and educational visits (to Haworth Parsonage and Seven Stories, for example) to writing workshops, drama and reading clubs
