Athletics Success!

12th June 2018

38 students from years 8, 9 and 10 represented St. Joseph’s in the annual South Tyneside Schools Athletics Championships at Monkton Stadium on Wednesday 16th May 2018. We had some excellent performances with more than half of our students securing a first or second place finish and qualifying for the next round. St. Joseph’s were announced the overall champions, beating second place, St. Wilfrid’s by 7 points.

Qualifying students will be representing South Tyneside in the Durham Schools County Championships on Saturday 9th June, at Monkton Stadium. If they can perform well at this round they will gain the honour of representing Durham County at the Inter County Championships, and the possibility of gaining a place in the team for the National Finals in July.

We wish all qualifiers good luck for the next round.

In addition to this, a group of our Year 10 Sports Leaders were selected to assist with the organisation and running of the event.

They worked extremely hard and showed competence and efficiency to allow the track events to run smoothly. Staff from South Tyneside Sports Development Team and the School Games set-up praised the students for their maturity and hard work. Again, a massive well done to all who were involved.

Thursday, 17th May 2018 was a second chance for some of our students to perform on the athletics stage, this time being in the Durham Schools County Pentathlon Championships.

This is a team event, with each competitor competing in all 5 of the following events:

Hurdles, High Jump, Shot Putt, Long Jump, and 800m. Competitors gain points for their performances, with the highest scorers coming out on top. All representatives performed brilliantly throughout the day, with many picking up personal bests in various events. year 9 student, Tom Paterson performed particularly well, beating off 41 other competitors to hold the gold medal position across all 5 events.

Tom will go on to represent Durham County at the Inter County Championships in Middlesbrough on 23rd and 24th June, where he will attempt to win a place in the National Finals in September.

Good luck Tom!
